8 Benefits of exfoliation

There Is absolutely no point in applying expensive creams and serums if you are not exfoliating consistently.

There, I said it.

And it is absolutely true. Exfoliation is the most important step in any beauty routine.

I was always shocked during my years as a facialist at my spa in downtown Milan when my clients would tell me they couldn’t recall the last time they exfoliated.

They spent hundreds of euro on creams and beauty treatments but without consistent exfoliation that money was wasted.

In this article I will take you through what exfoliation is, why it’s important and the benefits you will immediately see.

What is exfoliation and what does it do?

Exfoliation is basically the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

Every day tens of thousands of skin cells die. Those dead cells naturally slough off when we move, get dressed and go about our day.

Unfortunately, this ‘natural’ exfoliation does not effectively remove enough of those dead skin cells. The result is a layer of dead skin covering our body.

Now, while not particularly dangerous or detrimental, this layer of dead skin cells is hardly conducive to skincare.

This layer creates a dull and tired skin tone. Your skin will look dry and fine lines will be more noticeable.

So, to remove this layer of dead skin cells we have a few options.

For the purpose of this article, I will focus only on the use of my Clean Beauty Swiss scrubs. They are specifically created to be delicate enough to use every day but effective enough to notice the difference they make in your skin after just one use.

My scrubs are designed to be used in just one minute at the end of your shower.

After washing and doing everything you need to do, take a small amount of the scrub made from coconut oil and either salt or sugar among other ingredients, and gently massage it over your skin. The abrasiveness of the sugar or salt will whisk away dead skin cells, leaving the healthy new cells hydrated thanks to the coconut oil. The result is healthy and toned skin that stays smooth and glowing all year long.

Benefits of Exfoliation

Brighter complexion

Everyone wants to have clear, vibrant skin. It is synonymous with health and youth. And you can’t get it from a skin cream.

The most important step to achieve that fresh faced glow is to exfoliate regularly, especially as we get older. As we age it’s important to stimulate cell regeneration so that we always have fresh, healthy skin.

By exfoliating your face at least 1-2 times a week you are stimulating your lymphatic system to flush out toxins and water retention, you are stimulating healthy blood flow which is what gives you that envious glow, you are keeping pores smaller and you are stimulating collagen production - all of which will be covered in this article.

To keep your skin bright and healthy, each of these factors work together to keep you looking rested and youthful - so important when the kids have kept you up all night!

Unclogs pores and reduces acne

OK, let’s be logical for a second. As we go through our day, our skin cells die, we spend our day in polluted air and there is probably some make up applied to our faces. All of these factors can clog our pores, potentially blocking dirt and bacteria deep within. Result, a blemish and enlarged pores.

By consistently removing the layer of dead skin cells, you are allowing your skin to breathe. The pores are open and able to purge the bacteria that can cause problems. Your skin is better able to regulate sebum production and will be better able to balance itself out.

Allows other products to penetrate and work more effectively

The dead skin cells that remain on your skin's surface will absorb any products that you apply.

Those cells form a sort of sponge on your skin’s surface. You could be using the most effective, expensive face cream, but if you are not exfoliating consistently you are throwing money away.

That goes for both face and body. Your skin will not be able to absorb any body creams or lotions.

The result is dry, dehydrated skin. When this happens the first thing you will notice is increased cellulite and crepe paper skin - those knees will start looking pretty saggy.

I recommend exfoliating every day with a scrub like Coffee Ginger or Cinnamon Sugar which are very delicate and leave your skin hydrated and soft. No need to waste time on sticky lotion after your shower - just towel off and you are ready to get dressed.

Increases lymphatic drainage

Lymphatic drainage is incredibly important for your body’s immune system. The lymphatic system is a network of hundreds of lymph nodes which act as a filter for your bloodstream.

They filter out toxins, waste and transport white blood cells throughout your body to fight infections.

Sometimes this network can become blocked or sluggish - by regularly exfoliating you are gently stimulating the lymphatic system. This allows your lymphatic system to more efficiently detoxify and to eliminate water retention and other toxins more efficiently.

Improves circulation

Our lifestyles have become more and more sedentary. Our blood circulation is becoming ever more sluggish and slowed down.

Why is this important? Our skin is the largest organ and it needs to have a steady supply of fresh, oxygenated blood flow to maintain its health.

Have you noticed that gorgeous glow you get after exercising? That is from increased blood flow to the skin surface. You can mimic that effect by exfoliating regularly.

One of the major causes of both wrinkles and cellulite is a sluggish blood flow. By consistently exfoliating you are bringing fresh blood flow to the skin surface leaving you with a healthy glow. But you will also be strengthening your skin, increasing collagen production (more on that next) and giving yourself a healthy glow.

Stimulates collagen synthesis

Regular exfoliation will help to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is an incredibly important protein for our skin. Over time, our body produces less and less. Infact, after the age of 40 research has shown that we have a 1% decrease every single year. Now, when we have a deficiency of collagen our skin becomes more relaxed. This relaxation in skin tone unfortunately brings with it the tell-tale signs of aging - fine lines become more noticeable all over our bodies, our faces show more wrinkles and we begin to have sagging skin around our eyes and along our jaw line… the dreaded jowls!

Regular exfoliation will help to stimulate collagen synthesis. It makes your skin stay stronger longer. Which keeps you always looking younger than your friends!

Cell turnover is increased

Have you noticed how long it takes for a cut to heal as opposed to our kids who heal in 5 minutes? Yep, our cell turnover has decreased over time.

By exfoliating regularly you are actually stimulating this cell turnover. When you remove the dead cells more frequently your body produces more.

Result - your skin is fresher and stronger, keeping you younger looking longer.

Reduces ingrown hairs

If you suffer from ingrown hairs after shaving or waxing, a good scrub beforehand and a couple of days after waxing is your best bet. By removing the layer of dead skin cells your hair will not become stuck under that layer. In addition you will have a closer shave and much more effective wax. Not too shabby huh?

Wrapping it up…

I have always said it and I will say it again, the single most important part of any beauty routine is regular exfoliation.

As you can see the benefits are amazing and it is such an easy step to do.

I believe that when a woman feels beautiful, she can do anything. By simply revealing beautiful, healthy skin you will look and feel more beautiful immediately.
