Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil in skincare - it's practically magic!

Coconut oil might just be one of the greatest additions you can make to your skincare routine.

I use it all the time - to remove makeup, as a deep moisturizer (I use it every night on my neck and chest) and obviously in all of my scrubs. It basically does EVERYTHING in the realm of beauty routine.

I tried so many different types of oils in my scrub testing phase, olive oil, almond oil and on and on.  But coconut oil was by far the best hydrator, easiest to use and the best at leaving my skin soft and velvety without being sticky,

Skin Elasticity

The main reason it's just so fantastic is because it is rich in fatty acids. In fact, it's made up of about 94% fatty acids. Fatty acids contribute to your skin's elasticity and protect your skin from the signs of aging.

Not only does this help your face - the more elastic your skin, the fewer wrinkles you will see.  But it is an incredible benefit for the rest of your body. Elasticity in your skin helps it to manage dramatic weight loss or weight gain - the more elastic your skin less likely you'll get stretchmarks.  And this toned skin does more than just resist stretchmarks - it also greatly reduces the appearance of cellulite and helps your breasts stay perkier.

Antioxidants Protect your Skin

Coconut oil also is full of antioxidants – most important of which is vitamin E.  Vitamin E is critical to protecting your skin from free radicals, too much sunshine, pollution, toxins.  All of which visibly damage our skin irreparably, an ounce of prevention ladies!

Super Hydrator

Along with vitamin E, the presence of coconut oil is lauric acid – it makes up about 50% of coconut oil and increases its hydrating power. Leading skincare experts and beauty bloggers swear by coconut oil for clearing up psoriasis.  As a clean beauty option, you just can’t get any cleaner for a persistent problem.

Fights Acne

Another important aspect of lauric acid is that it is full of anti-microbial properties.  This can make a significant difference to acne prone skin.  Just a little goes a long way to clearing up blemishes. Coconut oil is also full of anti-inflammatory properties – another way it can help those acne flair ups.  Because it is known to heal wounds and regenerate the skin, works great if acne was a past problem but it left those annoying little scars!

Try making an acne busting coffee scrub - mix ground coffee, baking soda with a bit of coconut oil to create a gentle scrub. Start off slowly though, coconut oil is a comedogenic oil which means it has the potential to clog your pores.  Try once a week and see how your skin reacts. That being said, I’d recommend giving it some time even if you see some break outs.  Experts claim that coconut oil is so healing, that that break out is actually just your skin releasing toxins trapped in your skin and that with continued use your skin will clear up.

Naturally Removes Makeup

This is my personal favorite – coconut oil is amazing at removing eye makeup! I have tried every ‘gentle’ makeup remover available, I have never found one that effectively removed my mascara and that didn’t leave my eyes a red, itchy mess. And it’s so easy to use – just a small scoop (think blueberry size), rub it between my hands to get it nice and soft and then rub it on my face.  After massaging for a minute, a warm, damp washcloth removes all the makeup and then I cleanse as usual.

Gentle daily exfoliant

Coconut oil can even be used as a gentle daily exfoliant.  Thanks to its high concentration of Coconut oil can be used to exfoliate and cleanse skin. The acids in coconut oil provide chemical exfoliation, helping to slough off dead skin cells and reveal the brighter, smoother skin underneath.

For these reasons, many women find coconut oil to be an ideal makeup remover! To use it, just rub a bit of coconut oil between your hands until warm, then massage it into skin for about a minute to dissolve makeup.
