My Top 8 Tips for Fall Skincare [2021]

Skincare during the first cool days of fall is and should be different from summer skincare.

Fall skincare is all about repairing the damage to our skin during the summer months. Heat, humidity, salt and pool water all contribute to damaging our skin. In response, our skin produces more sebum for protection and cell turnover is increased.

As the saying goes, ‘and all at once summer fell into fall’, our skin undergoes an abrupt change with the change of seasons.

Suddenly it is cooler and the air is dryer and our skin needs some extra love to prevent it from breaking out or turning grey and dull.

So let’s get right into my top 8 tips to keep your summer glow during the fall.


Exfoliation is the absolute most important step to maintaining a summer glow well into fall.

You will keep what’s left of your summer tan for longer by following this simple rule. Your tan is due to melanin stimulation - you don’t tan like toast. The outermost layer of skin is not where your tan is, so removing those dead cells will only make your tan more beautiful.

As a reaction to the stresses to our skin during the summer months, cell regeneration increases. So, while new cells are generated more quickly, that means that the layer of dead skin cells is thicker. The result is dry skin that is prone to breakouts and a dull, grey skin tone.

It’s important to find a delicate scrub that will allow you to exfoliate every day, like Clean Beauty Swiss scrubs. I recommend my Rose Scrub during this period. First coconut oil is warmed and infused with real rose petals. The roses will nourish and protect your skin. Sea salt is added as an exfoliant which will gently remove dead skin cells while helping to detoxify your skin at the same time. It is gentle enough to use every day and will give you noticeably softer, more luminous skin after just 1 use.



Stay moisturized

This may be a bit counter intuitive. As a way to defend itself from summer heat, sun, and cold air conditioning, our skin increases cell regeneration (skin cells die and regenerate much more quickly) and sebum (oil) production.

As the weather cools down your skin may feel oily and broken out. Be patient.

Your skin is just adapting to the new drier air and cooler temperatures. Ironically, you may not be using an adequate moisturizer.

Make sure you are exfoliating (I’ll talk more about this in the next section) and using a richer moisturizer. I always turn to my best selling Coffee Ginger scrub during the fall. After using it to exfoliate my face, I leave it in place for 20 minutes as a super hydrating, energizing mask.

Try using a thermal water spray, like the ones by Avène and Evian to keep your skin from drying out through the day.

If you feel like your skin is too oily, use blotting papers instead of harsh toners and astringents which can make the problem worse.



Keep air from getting too dry

The air naturally dries out during the change from summer to fall, one of my favorite things about fall!

Unfortunately this is rarely a gradual decrease but rather an abrupt change followed by using heaters.

Such a drastic change causes your body to produce more sebum, oil, to keep your hydration levels stable. The extra boost in sebum can cause breakouts and dull skin.

Invest in a simple air humidifier to keep in your bedroom. This has been a total game changer for me. 

A simple tool that will keep your skin glowing and will even help your body to defend against flu season. Just make sure to clean it regularly and to always use fresh water.

Hydrate from the inside out

During the transition from summer to fall, the general humidity levels of the environment drop. With the cooler weather you are more likely to take a hot shower (I’ll be addressing this in the next section) which dries out your skin.

In addition, I don’t know about you, but I am just coming out of the fog of getting the kids back to school and getting myself back into my daily routine - which has me exhausted. I know for sure I am drinking much less water and way more coffee to cope with the demands on my time and energy. The double dry out combo is making a mess of my skin.

Make sure to get enough water - at least 1.5 liters a day. To hydrate yourself properly, which is not only going to keep your skin glowing but will keep you healthier this season, you don’t have to depend only on water.

Try adding green tea to your daily routine. Green tea is full of powerful antioxidants and will help to heal your skin from the inside out. Don’t like the flavor? I get it, I always add a fruit flavored herbal tea to my green tea to help make it taste sweeter.

Eat lots of citrus and other hydrating fruits and vegetables. Oranges, lemons, mandarins are all filling up the supermarkets now. By adding more citrus to your diet you are giving your skin a huge boost of Vitamin C which is important for boosting collagen production and hydrating your skin from the inside out.

Avoid hot water

As a devoted bath lover, this one is hard for me to accept. On cool, rainy days I love nothing more than relaxing at the end of the day in a lovely hot bubble bath.

But, unfortunately, the hot water will strip away your skin’s moisture and it will irritate your skin causing it to become inflamed and irritated.

But, as I said, I love my hot baths. And so, I have found a work around! I don’t let my bath get too hot, just warm enough to be soothing and help me relax.

I also add a generous spoonful of Lavender Vanilla scrub to the warm water. The coconut oil instantly melts into the water hydrating my skin and protecting it from the heat.

Don’t forget that your lips need extra attention

I absolutely hate when my lips get dry. And the change from summer to fall is the worst.

Exfoliation is not only for your face and body - your lips need to be exfoliated as well.

Obviously you can’t use just any exfoliant on your lips - it needs to be absolutely natural and delicate.

My Peppermint Vanilla scrub is perfect! Made with coconut oil (of course) and sugar making it extremely delicate. Add dried organic peppermint leaves, peppermint essential oil which will help to plump up your lips and real vanilla bean. It leaves a delicious taste and works perfectly on your delicate mouth.


Keep on using SPF - even when it’s cloudy and rainy outside

Always wear your sunscreen.

This is the best habit that you could ever develop. Even on the cloudiest, rainiest days UV rays get through to your skin. Not only will they discolor your skin leaving unwanted ‘age spots’ but they will accelerate wrinkling and sagging skin.

I remember reading about a Hollywood actress with extremely fair skin who would wear it even indoors to protect her skin from the UV rays coming off of her lights!

While I think that may be just a bit extreme, I apply SPF 50 every single day. I find that is the only way I can stay consistent. It has to become a habit, just like brushing your teeth and washing your face.

Morning routine is always to wash, tone, moisturize and protect. Every day.

Don’t panic!

The most important skin care advice is to not panic.

If you notice that you are starting to break out, don’t go nuclear and start attacking your skin with harsh astringents and pimple creams. Relax. It will all sort itself out.

Try to drink more water and make sure you are getting enough sleep.

Reduce the amount of dairy products you consume and skip the evening cocktail.

Change cleanser - but rather than getting a harsh, drying product, try for a gentle, hydrating formula. I absolutely LOVE Lubex Cleansing Milk.

Last thoughts

The transition from summer to fall generally brings skin problems with it. If your skin really has a freak out, schedule a facial with your trusted aesthetician to really get your skin exfoliated and cleaned. 

If you focus on exfoliating delicately and keeping your skin hydrated both inside and out, you will be able to make it  through fall with gorgeous glowing skin.
