5 Tips for Gorgeous Fall Skin

by Kate Beard |

The transition from summer to fall can be devastating to our skin.

During the summer months we tend to exercise more, drink more water and frankly everyone looks better with a little bit of a tan.

But that summer fun comes with a price, even if you use SPF 50 every single day in the summer, you can still end up with dark spots and more visible fine lines and wrinkles.

As our summer glow fades, our skin can look blotchy, broken out and generally unwell.

Check out these 5 tips to keep your skin glowing and fresh as we move from summer to fall!

Hydrate from the inside out

It’s always hard to keep drinking 2-3 liters of water in the fall and winter. The cold weather makes that glass of water less appealing for sure. Try getting more fruit into your diet. Oranges, mandarines, grapes and kiwi are all full of water. In addition they each have high concentrations of Vitamin C which is not just great for your immune system but it is one of the most potent antioxidants to protect your skin and repair the damage that summer sun has caused.

Try drinking a few glasses of warm lemon water throughout the day. You have the added benefit of high concentrations of Vitamin C but it also has been shown to create a more alkaline state for your body which reduces inflammation - perfect not only to reduce the aches and pains of the chilly weather but helps reduce acne and eczema!

Another great tip to keep your skin hydrated is to eat well! Enjoy salmon, avocado, walnuts which are full of healthy fats and help to keep your skin toned and glowing!

Use Antioxidants to Repair Summer Skin Damage

Vitamin E fights against UV photodamage and helps strengthen skin’s natural barrier which is fundamental to protect skin in the coming months. Vitamin E is found in natural oils, nuts and leafy green vegetables like spinach.

Green Tea is rich in plant polyphenols, it is anti-inflammatory and fights the free radicals that can cause premature aging (sun exposure, pollution). Try drinking 2-3 cups of green tea every day. Not only will you help keep your skin hydrated but you will also be repairing it from the inside out.

Vitamin C is a powerful immunity strengthener - the best way to keep skin glowing and beautiful is to be able to avoid cold and flu medicine! When used on skin it is a fantastic skin lightener in case any dark spots have appeared after summer tanning.

Turmeric decreases inflammation, speeds up wound healing and is antimicrobial. It targets your pores and can calm irritated skin. You can also use turmeric on those dark spots that you notice now that your tan is fading - just make a paste out of turmeric powder and honey, apply and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse and repeat 2-3 times a week.

Add Retinol to Your Beauty Routine

Retinol is actually a form of Vitamin A that has been proven in hundreds of studies to actually fight wrinkles! By applying it to your skin it can improve collagen production AND decrease collagen breakdown - the perfect anti age combination!

Until now retinol has had a negative side effect however, it can be very irritating to skin at first and can leave it dry and irritated.

But now there are several natural, plant based versions of retinol that are showing promise. Beta carotene, rosehip oil and now bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is a plant extract that stimulates production and works in the same way as chemical retinoids do but without drying out skin or creating inflammation.

Exfoliate

During the summer our skin naturally thickens. All that sun, sand and sea is a daily attack on our skin. As a way to protect itself, our skin thickens and our sebum production increases. After that summer sun has gone, we are left with a lot of dead skin cells and oily skin - the perfect combination for breakouts and visible wrinkles.

Gentle exfoliation with a hydrating scrub can work miracles in this change of season. Clean Beauty Swiss scrubs are all coconut oil based and are delicate enough to use on sensitive skin.

Cinnamon Sugar is full of antioxidant rich cinnamon. This little miracle can help repair skin damage from summer months and it's amazing perfume is known to be a great mood enhancer. Cinnamon is the perfect addition to your cold, rainy weather skin care routine because it will literally put you into a better mood!

Coffee Ginger scrub is also a great alternative. An extremely delicate scrub that gets your circulation activated - that fresh oxygenated blood flow to the skin’s surface will keep your skin tone rosy and glowing while helping to combat fine lines and wrinkles.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of any beauty routine. Skin repairs itself while you sleep so you really do need to be getting between 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you sleep less than 6 hours, you are almost certainly showing signs in your skin.

Just adding another 1-3 hours of sleep will give you noticeable results after just 1 day. Keep it up for a few weeks and people will notice a firmer, more glowing skin!

Here’s why:

  1. You will have fewer wrinkles - collagen production increases while you sleep. Collagen keeps the skin firmer and diminishes wrinkles.
  2. Our body increases blood flow while we sleep, this increased circulation keeps skin fresh and healthy looking. When you see your skin turn dull and grey take a look at how much you’re sleeping. In just 1 night you can make a big difference.
  3. Getting enough sleep reduces dark circles and puffiness under your eyes. Bright eyes will make your whole face look better.

So, as you can see there are easy ways to keep your skin glowing and healthy all year long! Give these tips a try and let me know if they make a difference!
