Cellulite is probably the most despised word among women. Cellulite forms when fat deposits beneath the skin creating a lumpy or grainy appearance to the skin surface, especially on our thighs and butt. This ‘orange peel’ look of cellulite is due to an imbalance in the connective tissue creating an uneven skin surface. Cellulite is a skin condition that affects up to 98% of women.
Cellulite is caused not only by this accumulation of fat under the skin (in fact, being thin is not in any way a guarantee against cellulite). Some women are more susceptible to it than others. It has been found that our lifestyle, diet, hormones and genetics all play a role on how easily we can be affected by cellulite.
5 Ways to Eliminate Cellulite
Cellulite seems to be one of those skin conditions that bothers most women these days. But to be pretty clear, cellulite is normal and common. 9 out of 10 women have cellulite at some point in their life. While cellulite is not regarded as a flaw or sign of failure, some women will stop at nothing to remove it – even so far as spending thousands of francs for the newest fad at the esthetician, or even having surgery. While these may be incredibly tempting, they generally are only temporary fixes. You might see results immediately, but most of the time the cellulite will come back. Let’s take a look at some natural ways we can diminish the appearance of cellulite.
1) Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet
While you can still have cellulite if you are a thin person, being overweight is definitely going to make the problem worse. By eating a well-balanced diet full of healthy fruits and vegetables you are taking the first step to winning the battle. You know the saying, you are what you eat. Poor diet will affect cellulite formation, so it’s important you always eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Above all, keep your sodium levels in check. Too much sodium leads to water retention and this is the number one factor to making cellulite more visible. Sugar needs to be kept at a minimum as well. Sugary foods can lead to the accumulation of toxins and fat in the body.
Sugar inhibits collagen production which slows down as we age anyway, that collagen keeps your skin frim and toned – reducing the appearance of cellulite. Go for healthy proteins and fats, grains, fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet will help maintain a good weight and ensure your body is provided with the right nutrients and antioxidants. Antioxidants fights against the effects of free radicals which damages skin cells and contribute to the formation of cellulite.
2) Drink Plenty of Water
Our bodies are made of 60% water, so it makes sense that hydration will play a huge factor in cellulite and fat metabolism. Water flushes the body and gets rid of the harmful toxins that cause cellulite formation.
Drinking at least 2 liters of water a day is the easiest way to reduce cellulite. Ironically, water retention, one of the leading causes of cellulite, is often the result of dehydration! Dehydration makes cellulite more obvious. Dehydration causes the skin to become feeble and thin which makes the appearance of cellulite visible. That means keep alcohol and sodas to a minimum as both contribute to dehydration.
3) Exercise regularly
One of the things I hear most often is that cellulite is a relatively new phenomenon. That is reltively true – whikle women have had cellulite since the beginning of time for sure, they were much more active. Our sedentary lifestyle has a lot to do with the problem. We move less, work at a desk or even standing but in one position – these are circulation busters! Optimum blood circulation is critical to diminishing cellulite.
Exercise helps in a couple of key ways – it gets your blood pumping which will bothe reduce water retention and also reduce the overall fat in your body making cellulite less noticeable. Someone who is muscular appears smoother and firmer which makes it difficult to spot them with cellulite.
Get moving! It really doesn’t take much – wear a step tracker and make sure you get in 10,000 steps a day. Take the stairs, park in the furthest parking spot. Get yourself involved in an exercise program that is both the combination of aerobic and strength training. This will help burn the fat in your body and give you a well-toned and firm muscle. Get in a good workout at least twice a week concentrating on areas of your body that are prone to cellulite.
4) Regular Massages
Regular massages are going to help BIG TIME – there you have it, the perfect excuse to indulge my dear!!!! Frequent massages help increase blood and lymph flow in the body. This helps get rid of the accumulated toxins in the fat layer which leads to inflammation and cellulite.
A good massage therapist will know how to increase your blood flow. This increased circulation will help tone skin and make it firmer and more resistant to those annoying dimples. She will also know how to illuminate water retention – be sure to have her concentrate on your legs and butt. Her movements will always be massaging towards your lymph nodes (if she if massaging your legs, the massage should always go towards the lymph nodes in your pelvic area).
After getting a massage, increase it’s efficacy by drinking more water than usual. All of the liberated toxins and water retention will be flushed out even more effectively.
