Simple Skincare for Busy Moms

Does the idea of taking care of your skin fill you with anxiety and guilt?

I’ve been there, the internet and beauty counters are full of complicated skin care routines. They are full of judgment and just seem so out of touch with the reality of being a busy mom.

When I worked as a facialist at my spa in Milan, I was amazed at how few of my clients practiced consistent, simple skincare.

They thought they didn’t have the time for all of the complicated (and expensive) products and steps they thought were required, and so they didn’t bother with doing anything.

I am here to tell you that the best skin care routine is the simple one that you can follow every single day.

Let’s dive in shall we?

Simple Skincare does Not Always Equal Easy Skincare

Years before I had kids, I wanted to get ready for a beach vacation with my husband. I went to the nearest shop and decided to buy a popular cellulite cream I had seen advertised in every magazine.

I went home and was so excited to try it! I opened the box and started reading the directions. OK, 1 little packet in the morning and 1 in the evening, massage on your thighs, hips and butt. No problem right?

So, that evening, I took a shower and opened the packet ... with my massage training I was convinced that it would work and that it was easy to do!

Oh. My. God.

I could not get it to absorb into my skin!

To do 1 thigh - and remember I do massages for a living, so I knew what I was doing - it took me over 20 minutes! I was stuck, my thigh covered with a thick, pasty cream that stayed there on the surface! AND I STILL had THE OTHER side to do !!!

I was literally stuck in the bathroom massaging this product for 45 minutes.

And for the magical product to work I had to do it every morning and every night for 2 weeks!

I did my best - I was able to apply the cream for 4 days and then, out of exhaustion, I skipped a night. The next morning I was so disappointed in myself that I skipped another application ...

Impossible. Totally and completely impossible.

At that point I was scolding myself because now I no longer had the right to expect the cream to work. So I had to start over ... and I lost my € 50!

There are so many products that promise to work miracles, but to achieve these miracles they create a process that is nearly impossible to complete.

My bathroom is full of my failures. They only collect dust because I don't have the time or dedication they need. And the only blame I ever place is directly at my own feet. I tell myself I am lazy, disorganized and too spacey.

It creates a whole negative soundtrack in my mind but it isn’t me, it isn’t MY FAULT, it’s the product!

Simple Skincare is Whatever Works for You

Let’s be honest, you could invest in beauty treatments at your aesthetician, expensive serums and creams from the department store.

But, if you are not able to stay consistent with any of it, you are literally throwing money away. None of those magic treatments or potions will have any lasting effect without consistency.

Your daily skin care routine should not take more than 2 minutes to complete morning and night. Here is the minimum you really should be doing:

  • Cleanse your skin
  • Hydrate your skin
  • Protect your skin

Cleanse Your Skin

You really do need to cleanse your skin both morning and night.

Most people understand the importance of using a cleanser at night - cleaning your face after a day of being outside where pollution can stick to your skin, wearing makeup and even sweating is totally logical right?

But cleansing in the morning is also really important.

During the night while we sleep, our skin performs a detox. It releases toxins that remain on the surface of our skin. In order to have a lovely blank canvas to hydrate and protect our skin a quick morning cleanse is important.

Hydrate Your Skin

After cleansing you need to apply a moisturizer. I recommend having both a day and night face cream.

There is a big difference between day and night creams and the job they are meant to do.

A day cream is going to be a lighter formulation. It serves to hydrate and protect your skin from the elements (wind/ cold/ heat/ pollution).

Whereas a night cream should be a much heavier consistency. It will hydrate much more deeply and typically will have ingredients targeting specific problems, for example repairing wrinkles, illuminating your complexion and such.

Protect Your Skin

Applying sun protection every day is absolutely necessary. I grew up in California and love a golden glow as much as the next girl, but sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging!

Creating Your Own Simple Skincare Routine

I just told you the very basics that you should be doing every day. I personally also use a toner after my cleanser to further hydrate my skin and to equalize my skin’s pH in the morning (I just splash it directly onto my face) and in the evening using a cotton disk I make certain that all of my makeup is gone as well.

I then gently massage a hyaluronic acid serum for added hydration.

The key I want you to understand is that you need to play around with products and steps to find what works for you.

You know better than you think you do what your skin needs. Listen to your skin, listen to your body. Try out different formulations and different products.

If it doesn’t make your skin feel amazing, it’s not the right product for you.

Final Thoughts

A consistent simple skincare routine will keep your skin glowing and fresh. It’s important that you find what works for you. Each of us has our own skin type, time restrictions and technical capability.

At the end of the day, you should feel wonderful after you care for your skin. I can’t tell you how many times I have wanted to skip washing my face, but KNOWING how great it will feel pushed me past the tiredness.

Trust yourself. Listen to your skin. And treat yourself well every day. When you feel beautiful EVERYTHING is possible!
